Horror is not limited to monsters who go bump in the night – the realm of fear is far more versatile and expansive. What are some examples of these unusual varieties?
A lack of privacy, typically a large power (such as a government or corporation) who monitors every move you make via facial recognition or other enhanced technology. New possibilities, especially with the advancements of Virtual Reality.
Cloning, or the concept of making perfect humans – what need would there be for imperfect natural-born humans thereafter?
Sensory stimuli: the scent of roses (The Hunger Games), humans moving unnaturally with abrupt jerky movements akin to animals, a little girl singing or laughing, etc.
Consider pulling from your heritage or other cultural folklore for inspiration.
Cults and Religion can be another significant source of fear.
A loss of control or inability to alert others to a dangerous situation that either you or a loved one are trapped in. Example: Being put under anesthesia for surgery, though the effect results in paralysis alone–not a loss of pain or consciousness.
Betrayal of trust from a significant other, family member, or close friend.
Mental health or drug issues resulting in hallucinations or psychosis.
A biologic pandemic or widespread disease carrying devastating malformations or fatal consequences, with no known cure.
